Some Orbits Are Better Than Others

earth2007 (39K)

So. The Human species has managed to complete one more orbit around the Sun without destroying itself. Good for us. In our year long orbit we have travelled over 578 million miles aboard the good spaceship Earth, just to end up exactly where we started from. Well, not quite. Since the Sun itself is travelling through space at more than 13 million miles a day, and taking us with it, and our Milky Way galaxy is travelling through space even faster at 32 million miles a day, and taking our Sun (and us) along with it as well, it's safe to say we are a very long way - several billion miles - from where we were one year ago.

But how far have we really travelled? How far have we progressed as a global society? How far have we evolved as a species? Have we moved forward at all, or have we regressed? Some orbits are better than others. Let's take a look...

So. Now we have a fresh, clean canvas called 2008. What will we create on that canvas, as individuals, and as a species? Will you finally quit smoking? Will you start writing that novel you've been talking about? Will Israel and Palestine make peace? Where will the terrorists strike next? Where will George Bush strike next? Will this be the year we make first contact with extraterrestrials? Where will our species go? What will we learn? What will we accomplish? Will we be proud, or ashamed... or both? Will we even make it around the Sun one more time?

The thing is, we've already paid our money, and been strapped into our seats, and the ride is already clicking forward. All we can do is hang on, try to lean the right way at the right time, and hope for the best. Good luck to us all, and as Red Green would say...

I'm pulling for you; we're all in this together.
