We got lucky this time. The chance arrest and subsequent interrogation of a man in Pakistan allowed authorities to uncover and foil a plot to blow up ten airliners over the Atlantic - the next 911. Seven were arrested in Pakistan, and twenty-four in Britain. The plot was well financed and conceived with deadly cunning. Explosive components were to be smuggled onto ten trans-atlantic airliners in the false bottoms of drink containers. Once in flight the components would be combined and detonated. Authorities categorized it as "an attempt to commit mass murder on an unimaginable scale."
The fact that there are fellow humans out there that think the mass murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children is in some way a good thing, is testament to the inherent savagery of our species. Times like these we'd better hope we're alone in the Universe. Because any intelligent life forms who saw what we were up to - murdering ourselves and our planet - would undoubtedly and righteously decide to do the Universe a favour, and exterminate us, like an infestation of disease ridden rats, poisoning the neighbourhood. Just another failed genetic experiment. Better luck next time.
In the meantime, power mad mutants like Osama Bin Laden and George W. Bush slug it out, using the poor, uneducated, and disenfranchised as cannon fodder, and the once beautiful planet Earth as a slaughterhouse. Day by day we see more of our personal liberties taken away. Now we aren't allowed to carry any kind of lotions, gels or liquids onto an airplane. What will be next? Soon we will not be allowed to carry anything onto a plane. We will have to be completely naked, undergo a thorough search of all bodily orifices, and have all the fillings removed from our teeth.
And it would serve us right. While so much of the world starves, we have an epidemic of obesity. While so much of the world struggles to make a living, we line up in malls for the latest high priced "toys". No wonder they hate us. I hate us, and I'm on our side! But blowing up airplanes? Is that the best we can come up with? What we should do is put people like Osama and W. in hospital, where they belong, and keep them heavily sedated until we can figure out how to cure them. And then get to work cleaning up the place. Yeah, right. Well, we can dream, can't we?
